Can We Be More Sensitive Towards Those Less Fortunate?  Another day, and another incident… one that shook me to the core of my deepest existence. I still shiver in shock and deep sadness at the upfront brutality of it. What is worse, it is so common to see – in many forms everywhere. A poor man comes to a store for a cup of tea; he is dirty & smelly, probably hasn’t bathed in a long time, and what does he get? A gets beaten and chased away, with a stool. Like an Animal. A man so poor, and yet – all we can see is how he discomfits us? We, who call ourselves Human Beings {Insaan}, cant see his pain, his haplessness, his abject status?       Where is our pity? Where is our pity? Where is our feeling of mercy? Where is our feeling of insaniyat? Gone south for the winter? Those of us, like me, who feel bad – cant even speak up, due to the public furore, and the risk to self. That is the worst of it; it reduces us to the level of everyone around us, making us j...

What hinders low-income or newly migrant urban citizens from reaping the benefits of cities? People all over the world, and particularly in developing countries, are migrating to cities because they are dynamic places of opportunity and possibility—places that potentially contain all the elements for a person to make a better life. Ending up to be known as an “informal settler”, more commonly known as a “squatter”.  4th Annual Real Estate Convention at Davao, 2013 The Organization of Socialized Housing Developments of the Philippine (OSHDP) us pushing for the inclusion of specific residential condominium projects under socialized housing through an amendment of R.A. 7279 to pave the way for what the group describes as “socialized housing condominiums”. Mr. Tan said the the housing problems in the country remains huge with 600.000 informal settler families all over the country and 104,000 in the N...

The effects of poverty Poverty in childhood is damaging: to children, to their life chances and to communities. Research has shown that family income impacts on children's lives and development in a variety of ways. Living on a low-income increases parents’ stress levels, in turn affecting relationships and family dynamics. Increases in family income can boost children's educational achievements, and emotional and physical wellbeing. Parents worry about the impact poverty has on their children, particularly that they may be bullied. Children living in poverty frequently report feeling excluded and embarrassed, citing it as a ‘key source of unhappiness’, and worry about their parents in turn. All areas of a child’s life are adversely affected by poverty: home, school, friendships and more. The most visible aspect is that they do not have what their friends have. Child poverty impacts on children's ability to enjoy their childhoods and achieve their aspirations.  ...
